MENSTRUATION - NOT A TABOO

An Overview 

The most beautiful phase of a girl child`s life is blossoming into a woman . Then why is it still considered as a taboo in our society ?whether it`s menstruation or menopause , talking about periods has often been a taboo subject . Menstruation , speaking biologically ,is normal vaginal bleeding that occurs to every single woman out there each month preparing for motherhood. Even after being such a very normal aspect of every woman`s life . The social stigma around menstruation has many minor and major impacts on a woman`s life.










 What Recent Reports Suggests about Menstruation?

The recent reports show that a shocking number of over 20 million girls in India drop out of schools once they start getting periods .So these girls are not , henceforth entitled to education , which is the most powerful tool for civilization ,just because their body goes through some important . Lack of awareness about menstruation , safety concerns of their daughters , post period bodily changes can be considered as the major reasons that force parents to discontinue their daughter`s  education and hand them over to the so-called safe hands of their husbands.







Condition In Households 

The period shame struggle is real ;a girl cannot ask her mother regarding menstruation in front of her father or brother .At the same time when men buy a packet of cigarette it`s been sold openly without any hesitation . When a shopkeeper was asked why he uses black polythene or newspaper for wrapping sanitary pads he replied character of a girl should always be covered . Girls are unable to talk about serious infections related menstruation and in the end have to suffer alone . If an injured person on the streets ask for help , people may overlook that but no one fails to notice the stains on a girl`s  skirt . In fact to get their clothes stained with period blood is considered shameful. In India, girls are not even allowed to enter temples or any religious places during periods.


Steps Taken  by Media/Celebs

Many celebrities , including Lena Dunham , Emily Ratajikowski, Meghan Markle and many more  have spoken out against menstrual stigma and opened up their own experience period shaming to shed any shame . The film Padman was an eye-opener for the people of India on menstrual hygiene and this should also open doors for discussion where  menstruation should not be considered a taboo subject or a sign of weakness. Men should also support menstruation by discussing matters of menstrual hygiene with their daughters and sisters .Let  the revolution usher in and change the scenario which has been dominating women for ages .



Conclusion

Let the change start from ourselves in every slightest way possible . This can even be a conversation with your friends regarding your period cramps . Education is the tool that could change the world . Educate our young boys and girls about these issues so that these topic do not remain hidden and so that they understand that there is not worth being curious when you see a sanitary pad so that they understand that this is not something to be ashamed of so that they realize that periods are bloody natural .
